The 2019/2020 season saw a full house of 32 enthusiastic Junior Curlers hit the ice on Sunday afternoons to learn the great game. This season we welcomed some new faces and many that have returned from last year – thanks to continuing community support from the Lakefield Lions Clubs that extends to 2028. The program made effective use of all sheets, including the “little rock program” on Ice D where the ghost rings came in to play.
And this year, a Lakefield team participated in a monthly Kawartha Junior Interclub program, hosted in November at Lindsay, and playing in Bobcaygeon, Peterborough and Lakefield before returning to Lindsay in early March. This was a great experience for our Juniors, to see other clubs and play on different ice, and to see what the game is all about – the thrill of competition and the chance to make new friends!
The Lakefield program can be especially proud that Owen Cecile, Matt Sanders, Hillary Davis, Isabella Northey and Adrianna Northey are now members of the St. Peter High School Boys and Girls Curling Teams. They will continue to bring vigor to the game we love and have never forgotten where it all began. This year the St Peter Boys Curling team finished 3rd at COSSA.
Thanks go to the Coaching Staff, Mike Moloney, Nicole Archibald, Chris Davies, Joe Muldoon, Patrick Croome and Jennifer Croome from the Junior players and from the Lakefield Club, for their contribution to the future of the game here at home and wherever our Juniors roam. And to the Juniors’ guardians, who made sure their charges got to practice each Sunday, and to the Interclub games.
Special recognition to a couple of parents – Mary Lou Northey and Julie Davis have gone above and beyond in organizing of Lakefield’s portion of the Kawartha Junior Interclub, and behind-the-scenes scheduling of weekly snacks; well done ladies.
We all look forward to returning Juniors and some new recruits for the 2020-2021 season!
